DIVIDED WE FALL: How Business Can Depolarize the US • Part 4

Business for America

Location: Online

Deepening divisions in the US, both politically and culturally, pose a threat to our democracy. The issue goes beyond a move to the right for Republicans or to the left among Democrats, as extremism has marginalized long-standing moderate political beliefs in both camps, and bipartisanship has been vilified. Our political system’s polarization and dysfunction harm our business environment and workplace culture.

The Niskanen Center and Business for America designed this four-part webinar series to discuss the root causes of political polarization, its social and economic costs, and what the business community can do to reduce division and have the greatest unifying impact.

PART IV

Policy Solutions: How business can help depolarize politics and incentivize moderation
For years, the Harvard Business School Competitiveness Report has found that political dysfunction is the #1 barrier to economic competitiveness. Political polarization is a root cause of that dysfunction. But how do we fix it?

In this session, we’ll explore public policy approaches to addressing the polarization at the root of America’s political dysfunction, including anti-gerrymandering, nonpartisan primaries, and ranked-choice voting. We’ll discuss how our current system incentivizes bad behavior. We’ll also explore how introducing more choice and competition into politics helps increase voter participation, increase diversity among winning candidates, reduces toxicity during elections, and increases bipartisan collaboration while in office.
