Fact Checking on Social Media: Can We Trust It?

Crossing Party Lines

Location: Online

Social media platforms play a growing role in shaping public discourse, and fact-checking has become a key part of how they manage misinformation. Some see fact-checking as essential for an informed public, while others worry about bias, overreach, or unintended consequences. As users, we all have expectations—whether about accuracy, fairness, or the freedom to share ideas.

At this meeting, we’ll explore the relationship between social media and fact-checking, considering what we want, what’s possible, and how we navigate the current landscape.

We’ll ask questions such as:

  • What role do you think fact-checking should play on social media, and who should decide what gets checked?
  • What expectations do you have for accuracy, fairness, and transparency in fact-checking?
  • How do you evaluate information online, and what strategies help you navigate conflicting claims?
  • What recourse would you want if you were fact checked?
If fact checking must be done, do you want it to be done by humans or algorithms?

This conversation is an opportunity to reflect on our own experiences and expectations while exploring different perspectives on fact-checking in the digital age.

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
