The End of American Democracy? Session 1 of 3

Location: Online

What it would mean for the American experiment with democracy to end? Of course, we can say that American democracy has always been more aspiration than fact. But with the recent rise of authoritarian, or anti-democratic, practices and beliefs, there are growing reasons to think that the American democratic experiment is at great risk of collapse from within.

Please join us for this 3-part interactive online conversation series to explore the authoritarian threats to our democracy. These sessions are intended to be collaborative conversations, not debates or arguments. We’ll focus on helping each other to explore the broader meaning of what is happening as it relates to the prospects for a democratic society to flourish.

Each date has a separate registration entry, since each can stand on its own. But each discussion also will build on the previous ones, so please register for as many as you can. You can register for all three via the Eventbrite link.

The projected topics are:

January 11, at 2PM ET: What would the end of democracy look like? Let’s explore the authoritarian threats to our democracy. This session will help orient the series.

January 18, at 2PM ET: What are the key processes and institutions that we need to have a healthy democracy? What concerns do you have about the capacity of these processes and institutions to resist authoritarianism? This session will focus more on the political system.

January 25, at 2PM ET: Democracy isn’t just about a form of government, it’s about a way of life in community. How does the rise of authoritarianism affect this broader sense of democracy? This session will focus more on the social and cultural aspects of democracy.
