Backsliding Democracies and Women’s Rights in the U.S., Part 1

92NY Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact

Can a democracy where women have never been equal ever really thrive? How are attacks on democracy tied to gender equity? What can we learn from past fights to protect and expand women’s rights in order to chart a path forward?

Join us for a two-part virtual series to explore how women’s rights are inextricably tied to the integrity and durability of democratic institutions. This programming is a continuation of a collaboration between Ms. Magazine and NYU Law’s Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Center which can be viewed here.

It is being held as part of the celebration of Ms. Magazine’s 50th anniversary and the release of the new book, 50 Years of Ms.: The Best of a Pathfinding Magazine That Ignited A Revolution.

The first session will address the domestic landscape and the state of equality, reproductive and gender justice in the U.S. Please join us for the second part on February 28, focusing on the global stage with experts weighing in from movements in Latin America, Ireland, and Central Europe.

Panelists include:
  • Alexis McGill Johnson, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund
  • Melissa Murray, Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Center at NYU Law
