In 2021, events conspired to provide the democracy reform movement with a small window to pass an unprecedented package of reforms to strengthen representation, significantly reduce the power of money in our politics, and provide a robust response to growing anti-democratic sentiment. By January 2022, that effort failed when two Democrats chose the filibuster over democracy.

What happened? And what chances, if any, remain at moving any significant democracy reforms at the federal level? What does this mean for state based reforms?
