Work is the only place where we truly connect across divides. We spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4 years with a diverse group of people spanning multiple political parties, generations, genders, ethnicities, and faiths.

The United States has a powerful purpose – “all are created equal”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.

But this is not our reality as 97% of us are unhealthy, 84% of us are stressed out, 78% of us are paycheck to paycheck, and most of us no longer believe in the “American Dream”. And these are just the averages – life is much worse for women and BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, e.g., $.01 of wealth in Black families for every dollar of wealth in white families.

Given our political polarization and gridlock, the low (25%) trust in our government and the high trust in our employers (72%), 68% of us now expect business to fill the leadership void and fulfill our purpose.

This book explores three big ideas that empower business leaders to lead their organizations and the nation.

IDEA #1: Businesses are the front line of our national renewal. They are where we have the best opportunity to nurture empathy, belonging, and trust among diverse people, which not only drives fulfillment, productivity, inclusion, and tenure, but effectuates our nation’s purpose, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and “E Pluribus Unum”.

IDEA #2: We need to start following the collective ethics of the bison, our national mammal, versus the extractive, individualist ethics of our national bird, the bald eagle.

IDEA #3: We have new tools and research at our disposal to do that, beginning by activating employee purpose and belonging in small diverse groups.
