Sports, Politics, and Community Engagement with Nichol Whiteman, CEO of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation

USC Center for the Political Future

Location: Online

Nichol Whiteman, CEO of the Los Angeles Dodger Foundation (LADF) and Fall 2021 Fellow at the USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future, joins co-directors Bob Shrum and Mike Murphy to discuss the intersection of sports, politics, and community engagement.

Under Nichol’s leadership, LADF tackles the most pressing problems facing Los Angeles with a mission to improve education, health care, homelessness, and social justice for all Angelenos. The foundation supports more than 100 nonprofit organizations with $21 million in investments over the last five years, has built 51 Dodgers Dreamfields, and has provided meals and donations to vulnerable populations during the coronavirus pandemic. The Dodgers have been central to the city’s efforts to combat the virus, feeding, testing, and vaccinating hundreds of thousands of Angelenos at Dodger Stadium.

Last summer, the Dodgers were named ESPN’s sports humanitarian team of the year for the foundation’s work. The team also made history by recognizing Juneteenth as a company holiday. As a Black woman in Major League Baseball, Whiteman understands the importance of access. She uses her resources to open doors and opportunities for youth from all backgrounds. The child of Jamaican immigrants “in search of a dream,” she frequently highlights the power of diversity in advocating for resources and opportunities for marginalized populations.
