Media: How Do We Recognize Bias?

Crossing Party Lines

Location: Online

With all the media outlets out there, shouldn’t it be easy to find multiple views? Sadly, media outlets often do a better job representing one perspective and gloss over others. Without the bigger picture, news consumers can be left thinking there’s only one side to a story. So how can we tell whether we’re seeing the world from all perspectives? How do we know what’s missing?

For this meetup, come prepared with your tips and tricks for identifying media bias. Do you focus on the words of an article, seek information about the author’s bias, try to figure out the publisher’s intentions? Be specific: what key phrases do you look for? What sources do you use to explore author or publisher bias?

Note that the focus of this conversation is on recognizing and identifying bias by sharing information and learning how to expand our news diet. What causes that bias or whether it is intentional may be considered for a separate meeting.

Join the Crossing Party Lines discussion and have a voice in our Nation’s Conversation! People of all views are welcomed, appreciated, and heard.

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
