Political Labels: Are You What They Think?

Regardless of how you identify politically, chances are you make assumptions about what it means to be “conservative,” “liberal,” “libertarian,” and the like. What if some of our assumptions are based on fiction rather than fact? What if some of our beliefs originate from media coverage rather than first hand experiences with real people? In a world where different political beliefs are rarely in the same room, and talking politics (or religion) is taboo, how are we to separate fact from fiction, the understanding from the misunderstanding?

At this meeting, as at all CPL meetings, we’ll break the taboo and talk politics across political lines. Come prepared with answers to the following questions:

• What misunderstandings have you run into about your political group(s), and which one would you most like to correct?
• What’s one thing others get right about your political group(s)?
• What value is there in using political labels to represent people’s views or policy stances?

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
