Schools, Standards, and Stakeholders: Who Decides?

School curriculum decisions shape what students learn and how well they are prepared for the future, but who should have the final say? Federal, state, and local governments all play a role, alongside educators and parents. At this meeting, we’ll explore the balance of influence across these levels and discuss which aspects of education they should control.

We’ll ask questions such as:

  • What role do you think federal, state, and local governments should play in deciding school curriculum?
  • Do you believe educators and parents should have more say in what’s taught, and if so, how should their input be incorporated?
  • What are your thoughts about how curriculum decisions might ensure both academic excellence and respect for diverse perspectives?
  • Do you think our current system of education needs to be improved? If so, what types of improvement do you think it needs? (Curriculum?  Testing? Funding? etc.)

This conversation offers a chance to examine the complexities of curriculum development and consider how we can create a system that serves all students and communities effectively.  If possible, please review the following links in preparation for our discussion:

Please do your best to arrive at the beginning of the meeting – once we are in breakout rooms and the conversations have started, the meeting doors close to new arrivals. The breakout rooms open (and the doors close) approximately 15 minutes after the hour.
