WORKSHOP: Crossing Party Lines in Real Life
CPL members learn and practice a new way to approach politics; we speak from personal experience and listen to understand. Everyone at our meetups attends with the same goal. Making mistakes is less risky because everyone in the room is working on the same skills and we make allowances for not always knowing what to say or how to respond. But what happens when you go out into the real world, where talking politics seems more like ranting, or sport, or even religion?
In this workshop we’ll give you some tips and techniques for bringing the CPL way of talking politics into your real lives.
We’ll look at four types of situations:
- Gatherings of friends who hold similar political views
- Family get-togethers with diverse perspectives
- Workplace conversations
- Chance encounters
While every situation is different, there are techniques and approaches you can bring to all these situations to help you navigate them in a way that leaves you feeling true to yourself and your beliefs. Come prepared to share your own biggest challenges and practice new ways of handling them with fellow CPL members.
Please Note: this is an advanced workshop and we recommend that if you have not attended at least one of CPL’s basic workshops, you purchase Lisa’s book Yes, You CAN Talk Politics (available on Amazon) and familiarize yourself with the concepts and skills introduced in the first three modules prior to attending. IMPORTANT: Before the workshop, please download and print the workshop handouts (https://crossingpartylines.com/cpl-201-crossing-party-lines-in-real-life/). Have the printouts and a pencil or pen handy at the workshop. We’ll be using the documents and making notes during our workshop exercises.
ABOUT CPL Workshops
Get the training you need to effectively cross party lines.
Crossing Party Lines provides a series of FREE classes teaching the skills we use to talk across differences. We teach proven, science-based techniques to foster curiosity, invite listening, and connect across differences.
We designed these techniques based on recent discoveries in such fields as cognitive science, neurobiology, and evolutionary psychology. Because understanding the partisan brain is central to the work of Crossing Party Lines, our workshops cover both the skills and some of the basic science behind them.
